Latin Dances - Cuban Family

These five dances are all closely related, and they all descend one way or another from dances originating in Cuba.  Although they differ widely in speed and mood, they share many similar steps.  All the dances in this family except for box rumba have basic steps which are closely and very obviously related.

Box rumba is slightly different - it's the result of taking a style of movement from the dance of one culture and applying it to the patterns of movement from the dance of another - a genuine hybrid of a dance (the same can be said of the style of samba we teach).  In the case of box rumba, the hip and knee action of the Cuban dances was incorporated into the box shaped patterns familiar to the waltz dancers of Anglo-American culture.  A wonderful fusion of dance cultures!
